Aircraft noise

Did you know that the Queensland Labor Government is using $100 million in taxpayer money to subsidise around 50 weekly flights that depart or arrive between 10pm and 6am?

Excessive flight noise is having serious impacts on the health and wellbeing of individuals and families across Brisbane since the opening of an additional runway at Brisbane Airport in July 2020.

Alongside Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance, our Federal Greens MPs in Brisbane have been amplifying community voices and holding Labor and the Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) to task, including tabling a private member’s bill to implement hourly caps on flights, a night curfew on non-emergency flights, and a plan to move more flights over the bay.

In February 2024, thanks to a strong campaign by Brisbane community members, the Greens secured a Senate inquiry into aircraft noise. You can read our Federal MPs joint submission here.

As a privatised entity, BAC exists to maximise profits. They have an aggressive plan for growth, aiming to become a major freight airport. This unchecked growth will worsen the impact of flight noise on Brisbane residents, small businesses and schools.

Successive Labor and LNP governments at state and federal levels have done nothing to stop or reign in this private corporation.

If elected as your state MP for McConnel, I will fight alongside this community and my Queensland Greens colleagues to use all available avenues to advocate for significant net noise reductions at Brisbane Airport and Archerfield Airport, and to scrap Labor’s handouts to airline corporations.
